There’s a quote from 500 Days of Summer that I absolutely adore. I tried looking for it everywhere, but with no luck. It’s the scene where Summer comes to Tom’s apartment in the rain after they had a fight. Summer apologizes for her unwillingness to label their “relationship”. Tom then explained that he just wanted some form of stability when he wakes in the morning. Her reply? “But Tom, nobody can give you that.”

When you turn 18, technically you’ve become an adult. But nothing has really changed. 19 comes around, still you feel nothing. Then suddenly 20 hits you in the face like a bitch slap. You start to panic but you don’t know why. Growing older is like losing stability. You realize that there is really nothing and no one in this world that’s always going to be there for you. Not your parents, not your boyfriend, not even your closest friends, and definitely not wealth or status. You’re the only person that can give yourself stability. You have to find a way to feel safe waking up every morning by yourself. It’s hard. It’s really hard.
